“RoboCup”: Students’ Clever Invention Gives Cerebral Palsy Patients More Independence

Staying hydrated can be a challenge, especially for those with mobility issues like cerebral palsy (CP). But two undergraduate engineering students at Rice University, Thomas Kutcher and Rafe Neathery, teamed up with disability advocate Gary Lynn to create the “RoboCup,” a clever robotic tool to help disabled individuals easily access their drinks. What’s even more remarkable is that the plans for the RoboCup are available for free online, making it an open-source solution.

The idea behind the RoboCup is to grant CP patients more independence, reducing their reliance on caregivers. It’s a simple yet effective device that’s designed to make life a bit easier for those facing mobility challenges. The RoboCup went through various iterations before reaching its current design. To ensure its effectiveness, the students consulted with caregiving and research professionals to incorporate more options for building the device, including different sensors, valves, and mechanisms to accommodate various wheelchair types.

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between simplicity, functionality, and durability. The final design features a mounted cup-and-straw arrangement that is both visually pleasing and unobtrusive. In a demonstration video, Gary Lynn can be seen activating a small sensor near his hand, which pivots an adjustable straw towards his mouth. This innovation offers disabled users more independence, and as Lynn put it, “getting to do this little task by themselves will enhance the confidence of the person using the device.”

Originally conceived as a single-semester project, the creators now plan to continue refining the RoboCup and explore adaptations for people with different mobility challenges. Additionally, the RoboCup is part of World Cerebral Palsy Day’s “Remarkable Designa-thon,” an initiative that promotes new products and services to aid individuals with CP. The public has the opportunity to vote for the RoboCup from October 6 to 13.”
