OpenAI and Common Sense Media Join Forces for Safer AI Experience

In a bid to foster trust among parents and policymakers regarding AI use among children and teens, OpenAI has entered into a collaboration with Common Sense Media. This partnership aims to develop AI guidelines and educational materials targeted at parents, educators, and young adults.

As part of this collaboration, OpenAI will work with Common Sense Media to curate “family-friendly” chatbot apps powered by OpenAI’s GenAI models in the GPT Store—the GPT marketplace. These apps will be curated based on Common Sense’s rating and evaluation standards, ensuring they align with safety and suitability criteria for young users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed the significance of AI’s potential benefits for families and teens and highlighted that the partnership with Common Sense will reinforce safety measures. He emphasized the importance of providing families and teens with confidence in using AI tools.

The partnership follows OpenAI’s commitment to participate in Common Sense’s framework, initiated in September, which focuses on ratings and reviews to assess the safety, transparency, ethical use, and impact of AI products. Common Sense’s framework aims to create a “nutrition label” for AI-powered apps, shedding light on their usage contexts and potential areas of opportunity and harm based on a set of common sense principles.

James Steyer, co-founder and CEO of Common Sense, acknowledged the knowledge gap among parents regarding GenAI tools compared to younger generations. He mentioned that the collaboration aims to educate families and educators about the safe and responsible use of OpenAI tools like ChatGPT, addressing any potential unintended consequences of emerging AI technology.

OpenAI has faced regulatory scrutiny, including an investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over concerns related to data collection and false statements. The collaboration with Common Sense Media aligns with OpenAI’s commitment to demonstrate the positive impact of its GenAI-powered apps on society while addressing biases and limitations associated with these tools.
