Super Smash Bros. Series Faces Gigantic Dilemma, Sakurai Declares it ‘Smash-tastically Huge’

In a world where video games continuously evolve, there’s one question that’s been on the minds of gamers for years: can Super Smash Bros. possibly get any bigger than Ultimate? Masahiro Sakurai, the genius behind the series, recently gave us his two cents in his own unique style.

It’s been nearly five years since the epic Super Smash Bros. Ultimate descended upon Nintendo Switch consoles worldwide, leaving gamers in awe. With its enormous roster of characters, including stars like Banjo-Kazooie, Heihachi Mishima from Tekken, and even the beloved Sora from Kingdom Hearts, fans have been left wondering if the franchise can ascend even higher.

In a candid discussion, Sakurai shared his musings about the future of Super Smash Bros. And guess what? He’s not so sure the series can stretch any further than the incredible spectacle Ultimate has already provided.

Sakurai, in his usual humble manner, expressed skepticism about the possibility of creating a Super Smash Bros. title that could surpass Ultimate. He acknowledged the herculean efforts of his development team during the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed them to deliver such astonishing content.

He stated, “As for what comes next for the Smash Bros. series, even I’m not sure. I feel we truly succeeded in making people happy with this game, but now that Smash Bros. has grown to be monstrous in size, I’d say it’s difficult to imagine an increase of this magnitude happening again.”

Sakurai, always one to leave a door ajar, added, “Every time, we managed to make a game that I had previously thought impossible, so I can’t say for certain there won’t be another, but I do think it would be difficult to push it any further than we have.”

Furthermore, Sakurai has hinted in the past that a Super Smash Bros. game without him is almost unimaginable. While he’s semi-retired from game development, there’s still that tantalizing possibility that a new Smash Bros. game could grace the mysterious Nintendo Switch successor, which has everyone’s curiosity piqued.

In essence, Super Smash Bros. faces a massive challenge: how to top the jaw-dropping spectacle of Ultimate. But as long as Sakurai is involved, we can’t help but remain hopeful for whatever comes next.
