Patty Jenkins Confirms Revival of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Project

In a surprising turn of events, Patty Jenkins, the renowned director behind Wonder Woman, has revealed that her shelved Star Wars project, Rogue Squadron, is back in development. During an interview with the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins disclosed that she has resumed work on the fighter pilot-focused spinoff after her schedule cleared up.

The revival of Rogue Squadron comes after initial doubts about the project’s fate, with many speculating it would never come to fruition. Jenkins shared insights into the project’s journey, explaining, “When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,’ so we started a deal for that to happen.”

However, with the uncertainty surrounding Wonder Woman 3, the focus shifted back to Rogue Squadron. Jenkins elaborated, “When Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars.”

Despite the project’s revival, Rogue Squadron remains in the early stages of development. Yet, the news offers a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly anticipating the Star Wars spinoff. Disney’s current focus on expanding the Star Wars universe through Disney+ spinoff shows has left many wondering about the future of the franchise’s cinematic endeavors.

Jenkins hinted at the challenges ahead, stating, “They have a hard job in front of them of, ‘What’s the first movie they’re going to do?’ They have other directors who have been working, but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron. We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”

Originally announced in 2020, Rogue Squadron faced setbacks, including an indefinite delay in 2021 and removal from Disney’s calendar in the subsequent year. However, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy expressed optimism about the project’s potential revival in April 2023, emphasizing that discussions surrounding Rogue Squadron were ongoing.

As Jenkins recommits to bringing her vision of a “fighter pilot movie” to life, the fate of Rogue Squadron remains uncertain. Yet, the director’s dedication and the ongoing dialogue surrounding the project offer hope that Star Wars fans may yet witness the thrilling adventures of Rogue Squadron on the big screen.
