BritBox to Shut Down in South Africa Less Than Three Years After Launch

BritBox, the streaming service launched by BBC Studios and ITV, will be ceasing operations in South Africa on August 30, 2024, according to a statement from the company. This announcement comes less than three years after the service’s launch in the country.

Key Points:

  • Closure Date: BritBox will shut down in South Africa on August 30, 2024.
  • Content Availability: Subscribers can continue to watch their favorite shows until the closure date.
  • Reason for Closure: The service is refocusing on more established markets with higher growth potential.

Background: BritBox South Africa was launched in August 2021, making it the fifth market globally to receive the platform. The service offered a variety of British television series, documentaries, and other programming, including popular shows like Unforgotten, Shetland, Vera, Doc Martin, and the British version of The Office.

Company Statement: A spokeswoman for BritBox expressed regret over the decision, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the news that BritBox will be closing in South Africa on 30 August 2024. Subscribers will have the chance to catch up on all their much-loved programming until August.” She further explained that the company is shifting its focus to markets with higher growth opportunities.

Content Transition: Although BritBox content was exclusive to the platform in South Africa, it is expected that some of this programming will become available on other platforms in the future. The spokeswoman also highlighted the availability of various BBC-branded channels on DStv, such as BBC Earth, BBC Brit, BBC Lifestyle, BBC UKTV, CBeebies, and BBC World News.

Market Performance: While the number of subscribers in South Africa has not been disclosed, the decision to withdraw from the market suggests that BritBox did not achieve the necessary subscriber base to sustain operations. The service was priced at R100 per month.

Partnership with MultiChoice: In June 2023, MultiChoice Group, which already broadcasts several BBC channels, integrated BritBox into its content offerings on the DStv Explora Ultra and DStv Streama boxes. Despite this collaboration, BritBox was unable to secure a substantial foothold in the South African market.

BritBox’s closure in South Africa is a strategic move to concentrate efforts on regions where the streaming service can achieve greater success. Fans of British programming in South Africa will need to explore alternative channels and platforms to continue enjoying their favorite shows.
