AM Drive: Porsche Macan EV Unveil & Volkswagen Bids Adieu to T-Roc Convertible

Porsche’s Electric Revolution: Macan EV Set to Shine

After a prolonged teaser campaign, Porsche is ready to lift the veil on the second-generation Macan EV on January 25. The sleek SUV boasts a powerful all-electric setup, delivering up to 603 hp and a robust 738 lb-ft of torque. Riding on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) jointly developed with Audi, the Macan EV promises a tech-rich interior, all-wheel drive with dual motors, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering. However, due to upcoming EU cybersecurity regulations, the gasoline model might be forced to retire, leaving customers with an electrifying option only.

Expect a potent 100-kWh battery, a 270-kW maximum charging power, and a well-balanced 48:52 weight distribution. With Audi planning its own Q6 E-Tron versions, these SUVs are set to redefine electric driving with impressive features like an electronic locking differential and staggered tires.

Volkswagen’s Convertible Farewell: T-Roc Cabriolet Nixed for Future Generations

In a surprising turn of events, Volkswagen has decided not to continue the legacy of the T-Roc Convertible beyond its current generation. Despite being the second best-selling convertible in Europe for the first 11 months of 2023, with 11,693 units sold, the T-Roc Cabriolet won’t see a follow-up model. This decision comes straight from the horse’s mouth, as VW’s development chief confirmed during CES 2024 that the new T-Roc slated for the next year won’t birth another convertible variant.

This move leaves the VW lineup without a convertible, a notable absence since the discontinuation of the hardtop Eos in 2016. As Volkswagen embraces a fully electric future in Europe by 2033, the T-Roc will stand among the last combustion engine models, riding on the MQB Evo platform shared with its hatchback sibling. The forthcoming T-Roc will mark the crossover’s evolution, adhering to the brand’s commitment to electrification.
