Microsoft Enhances Notepad on Windows 11 with Character Count Feature

Introduction: Microsoft’s built-in Notepad app on Windows 11 continues to receive upgrades, with the latest addition being a character count feature. The inclusion of this functionality aligns with Microsoft’s efforts to enhance the user experience and productivity within the Notepad application. In addition to character count, recent changes to Notepad include autosave options, tab support, dark mode, and even a virtual fidget spinner.

Character Count Feature:

In the Canary channel test version of Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced a character count feature to Notepad. Similar to Microsoft Word’s word count, Notepad’s character count is displayed at the bottom of the screen. When text is selected, the status bar shows character counts for both the selected text and the entire document. This addition provides users with a clear view of document length, whether specific text is selected or not.

Recent Notepad Enhancements:

  • Autosave Option: Notepad recently received an autosave option, allowing users to close the application without encountering a pop-up save prompt every time.
  • Tabs and Dark Mode: Microsoft added tab support and a dark mode to Notepad, improving the app’s organizational and visual aspects.

Widgets Section Improvements:

In the same Windows 11 test build, Microsoft is making improvements to the widgets section. Users will soon have the option to show widgets while hiding the feed of news and articles within the widgets screen. This customization feature is designed to enhance user control over the content displayed within the widgets section.

Release Expectations:

While these features are currently in the testing phase in the Canary channel, Microsoft is likely to refine and make further adjustments based on user feedback. Users can anticipate seeing these enhancements, including the character count feature in Notepad and improvements to the widgets section, in the Windows 11 update expected to roll out in early 2024.

As Microsoft continues to refine its applications and features on Windows 11, users can look forward to a more versatile and user-friendly Notepad experience with the addition of the character count feature.
